The Sanctuary

The primary, essential furnishings are the altar of Portland stone, the Bishop’s chair (Cathedra) and the lectern (Ambo).  It is, after all, the presence of the Bishop’s chair that makes a church into a Cathedral, for it is the symbol of his teaching authority as the shepherd of the diocese.

From the Cathedra, symbolising unity in faith, in sacrament and governance, the Bishop presides over the liturgy.

Each of these items of sanctuary furniture is simple but impressive and in keeping with all the other furnishings.

Made of natural materials, stone and wood, they were designed by the same hand that shaped the rest of the Cathedral.

The Sanctuary Cross in brass is the work of Mr R. W. Brumby, who also created the Reredos painting.
